I really enjoy practicing yoga but I don’t always get the time to attend regular classes, my practice is made up of mostly short sessions at home after running or early morning when I need to stretch out a bit and shake off the night’s sleep. I’m not entirely sure how I stumbled across Yoga Works but I think seeing photos posted by friends doing yoga out in the park is what attracted my attention.
Yoga Works offers yoga in “unusual spaces around Johannesburg” as quoted by Steven the yogi behind the company. Given the limited time I have to attend regular lengthy classes this seemed like the ideal opportunity to fit in a few sessions throughout the year with the added benefit of enjoying them at venues I would otherwise not have seen or experienced.
This year I have been fortunate enough to attend two such sessions, one at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (otherwise known as JAG) and the other one at Shine Studios. There are a few photos from the various classes scattered around this post to give you a feel for the sessions but if you want to see more (and your Portuguese is up to scratch) here is link to a video recorded for a show called Acesso VIP during the session at JAG. On a side note: I’m in the video in a few shots so I’m famous now right!???
I really appreciate all of the love and energy that Steven pours into his business, it really shines through in his sessions as they are exiting and full of energy. These events are gaining popularity so be warned, there can be a few hundred people at the bigger sessions (venue dependent) but don’t despair, there are always assistant instructors walking around willing to help and guide so I didn’t feel lost at any stage. For the bigger sessions (like the two I attended) Steven also provides poses for a range of experience levels so that relative newbies that don’t practice often enough (I’m referring to me here) can participate as well as those a little more experienced that make balancing on two hands with your legs off in various directions (which I later found out is called Flying Pigeon) seem effortless.
So if you are keen to get some yoga practice in the city of Johannesburg and experience a new and exciting venue at the same time check out Yoga Works.
Hope we get to meet at the next exiting session.
